Before crooning his way into our hearts with hits like: “I can’t Wait”, and Outkast’s “I like the way you move”, Sleepy Brown started off as one third of the super producer trio Organized Noize, penning and producing for such artists as TLC, Goodie Mob, Outkast, and Curtis Mayfield to name a few.
A Georgia Native, Brown is no stranger to music; inheriting his gift from father Jimmy Brown: lead vocalist and saxophonist for the 70’s funk band: Brick. With a bloodline like that, there’s no question that he wouldn’t carry on the musical legacy.
Now Sleepy is reemerging on the music scene with his latest project: Sex, Drugs, and Soul set to release in April. He’s also adding a new title to his already growing list of accolades: Record Label Owner.
With his new record label: 13 Black Records based out of sin city Las Vegas, Sleepy is definitely showing the world it’s no sin to be this talented. Metro Atlanta Black got the opportunity to sit down with Brown and get the latest on all his new projects, his inspiration, and everything else he has in store for the entertainment world. He also gave us the single off his latest release entitled “We Run the Night”. Enjoy!
MAB: What is the origin of the name “Sleepy” Brown?
SLEEPY: It came from wanting to be the coolest character ever. When I was coming up, Big Daddy Kane was the coolest dude to me, and he always looked sleepy so that’s how I got Sleepy Brown.
MAB: Listening to your music, you have a very classic sound about you. It’s definitely a sound that can be played years from now. Who are some of your musical influences?
SLEEPY: It comes from the 70’s, being a fan of 70’s crooners like Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, etc. And of course my dad with his band “Brick” was an influence. It’s music that I grew up listening to.
MAB: Your dad played saxophone in the funk/soul band “Brick” that had hits such as “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody” and “Dazz”. Did that play a big role in your pursuing music?
SLEEPY: My dad is still my hero, he’s one incredible man and his talents are unbelievable. I wanted to be just like him and no one could tell me I couldn’t be!
MAB: What made you decide to come from behind the scenes producing and penning hits for other artists and become a performer yourself?
SLEEPY: It’s always what I wanted to do. Staying behind the scenes helped me build my confidence, because I was very shy growing up. It helped me get my skills together. It’s always been a dream of mine but I never thought I’d get the nerve to do it. One of my best friends, Pimp C always told me if something was wack or right and he always had my back in music. I believe he was the one that pushed me to do this; he was the guy that helped in my career a whole lot. Not too many people know that.
MAB: You’re well respected in the hip-hop community and credited for being a pioneer in introducing southern style hip-hop to the rest of the world. What do you think about the direction hip-hop is taking today?
SLEEPY: I have no problem with hip hop today, just happy we’re still able to sell records. It’s still hood down south sounding but it has taken another shape in the techno world. It’s always going take a different form. I love Fewture, Rick Ross and Wayne right now. Hip Hop is still top dog to me and I’m loving where hip hop is today.
MAB: If you could work with any artist right now from any genre, who would you want to work with?
SLEEPY: I wouldn’t mind working with Drake on something. I like his style. Mike Poser, The Weekend, Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj.
MAB: You just launched a new record label: 13 Black Records. Where does the name come from?
SLEEPY: It started in LA but now it’s in Vegas. It’s made up of the production team: Organized Noize. It’s basically saying all bets on 13 black, all in and or all out.
MAB: Are there any artists on the label right now that we should be on the lookout for?
SLEEPY: Piranha Game, Leah Mendoza, Marie Avalon, longtime friend Chris that I worked with on “Can’t Wait” is on the label also.
MAB: Tell us about your new single “We run the night”
SLEEPY: Vegas was the inspiration for my new single “We Run the Night”. The vibe on the strip in Vegas, I was just looking at the skyline and anybody that comes here, that’s what they’re thinking: We Run the Night.
MAB: Is this Single available for your fans to purchase yet?
SLEEPY: It’s on ITunes and reverbnation.com/sleepybrown
MAB: When can we expect a full album from you and what type of vibe can we expect from it?
SLEEPY: The album will come out at the end of April. It’s called “Sex, Drugs, and Soul”. The whole album feels really Rat Pack to me. It’s the kind where you can lay back, be with your girls just chilling, have a glass of wine to, and there are songs you can dance to. I have Barry White’s son Daryl White on the album and he sounds just like his dad. People are going to be really surprised. I also have Bun B. on the album and OutKast. I’m trying to get my brother Cee-Lo so if the album gets pushed back, it’s because I’m trying to get Cee-Lo on there.
MAB: Can we expect any Tour Dates?
SLEEPY: I definitely plan on touring with this album. I’m really excited to get back out there. I could be in Atlanta soon!
MAB: How can your fans keep up with you?
SLEEPY: They can follow me on twitter @sleepyBrownATL or on Facebook at Sleepy Brown, and it’s me that the fans are talking to so if you send me something on there, I’m the one that’s responding.
