Based on Award-Winning Book from Local Author, Show Traces Journey to Equality in Historic South

In February, the Center for Puppetry Arts brings to the stage an acclaimed story from local author Calvin Alexander Ramsey. Ruth and the Green Book follows the journey of an African-American family from Chicago to Alabama in the 1950s. This fresh perspective on the struggle for equality offers a new way to celebrate Black History Month and learn about a relatively unknown chapter in civil rights history. Performances will be February 7-26, 2012.

Peete helps to keep the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. alive and inspire individuals to volunteer by participating in a special project in Atlanta

Rodney Peete, former NFL quarterback and co-founder of the HollyRod Foundation, in Atlanta on MLK Day. The 16 year veteran of the league is helping to conduct a special volunteer event on MLK Day in Atlanta as part of the Allstate “Give Back Day” program. The volunteer project is open to the public, and everyone in the Atlanta community is encouraged to join Peete and honor Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy through volunteerism.

Peete will help pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and inspire individuals to volunteer by participating in a special painting and beautification project at Humphries Elementary School in Atlanta on Jan. 16 from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Alexandria Phillips, Allstate’s 2012 Atlanta Give Back Day hero, will also participate in the community service initiative. Phillips, a senior at Spelman College, is one of four Give Back Day Heroes honored across the nation for embodying the principles of Dr. King through year-round commitment to volunteerism, making a positive impact in communities, and for encouraging others to follow her lead.

On December 16th (6.30 pm EST)  and 17th (2 pm EST), 2011, globally renowned interactive African drumming phenomenon and corporate employee retention facilitator, Drum Cafe, will make history with US Swimming as it sets the tone for the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool competition.

Community heroes, Rodney Peete kick off Allstate’s National “Give Back Day” in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Allstate Insurance Company today announced that Alexandria Phillips of Atlanta has been named a 2012 Allstate Give Back Day Hero. For the fourth consecutive year, Allstate is paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by encouraging individuals to volunteer in their communities on MLK Day 2012 (Jan. 16) through its Give Back Day program (allstate.com/givebackday). Rodney Peete, former NFL quarterback and co-founder of the HollyRod Foundation, is helping launch the 2012 program along with Phillips and three other outstanding community heroes who are recognized as leading volunteers in their communities. Peete and the four Heroes will be guiding Give Back Day activities in their home cities with Allstate.
