CHAMPS is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Atlanta, GA. In 2004, it was founded by Dr. James K. The new campaign aims to bring awareness about prostate cancer and the importance of early screening and detection in young men. “One in three men in their twenties have cancerous changes in their prostate. Many men are unaware of this fact, but if found early; prostate cancer has a good chance for cure. The key to the successful treatment of any cancer is early diagnosis,” says Dr. James K. Bennett.

Prostate Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, after lung cancer. More than 2 million men in the United States –one man in every six—have been diagnosed with the disease.

It occurs mainly in older men and nearly two thirds of cases are diagnosed in men age 65 and older. It is not unusual to find prostate cancer in men under the age of 40. Nevertheless, since the introduction of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test screening tool in 1986, the prostate cancer incidence rate has steadily and dramatically increased in men under age 50. The disparity widens when comparing Caucasians and African-Americans, with a two-fold increase in risk in the latter.

T.I., an advocate of health promotion, agreed to partner with CHAMPS due to its focus on men, ages 18 and older, who are medically underserved and traditionally do not make health care a priority and avoid confronting their health status for multiple reasons. The organization’s annual summit is open to the entire metropolitan community of Atlanta, but it is designed to the aforementioned population.

The theme for CHAMPS 2012 will be the “Young Faces of Prostate Cancer”. If men are educated at a younger age, they can learn to be proactive in monitoring their general health, as well as, their prostate health.
