The Odds Against U.S. Stage Play @ Atlanta 3D Complex

This play production is one that discusses the reality of urban youth but from their own perspective. This play that is written and performed in poetry verse and ​highlights untold narratives of youth who deal with odds against them such as poverty, academic distress, environmental imprisonment, violence, absent fathers, teen pregnancy and more. The play has been used to help identify the struggles and cultural behaviors of urban youth while also helping educators and even parents to understand this demographic of students. Students too have been able to get a better understanding of their own realities after witnessing this production. “The Odds Against U.S.” not only vividly exhibits the odds against urban youth but it also shows them that they can overcome these barriers.

This is not another conference where you just come to hear people speak. This will be a place of action. This will be a forum that requires things of you so that you can get the help that you need. Whether it is in the form of starting a business, repairing your credit, resources of overcoming a criminal record, etc. We will be putting the issues on the table and giving you gems to take away and get started on the right road.

“Get On The Bus” Kappa League College Tour @ Holiday Inn Camp Creek

The Get On The Bus College Tour exposes aspiring college students to the world of colleges and universities in order to promote increased college attendance at these institutions of higher learning. For many students, the process of figuring out which school best fits their needs is an overwhelming and confusing task. The Get On The Bus Tour transforms this experience into an enriching and fun adventure, in which students take campus tours, have meetings with admissions representatives and receive materials to help evaluate each school. Tour participants are shown how to get the most out of their future college visits. For example, students learn what questions they should be asking of campus officials, how to compare schools to one another, and what factors are most important for their personal college selection process. Many tours are led by the admissions office staff, others by members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.depending on the campus. Honda Battle of the Bands Recuritment Fair (10am-2pm) – Representatives from HBCUs will be on hand to speak with thousands of prospective students at the 2018 Honda Battle of the Bands Recruitment Fair. Attendees will learn valuable information about HBCU admission requirements and about requirements for joining an HBCU marching bands. HBCU’s offer a variety of scholastic majors and opportunities in various fields, providing the ultimate academic and cultural college experience.

Honda Battle of the Bands (3pm) – The Honda Battle of the Bands was created to celebrate, support and recognize the excellence of Black college marching bands and the unique academic experience offered by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Honda annually awards approximately $200,000 in grants to participating marching bands during the program period. This year marks a significant milestone – 15 years of the program’s existence!

  • Provides best practices, short/long term that focuses on how to improve and expand

  • Admission to all interactive and engaging educational sessions

Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be received in writing (email). Refunds will be given only for cancellations received thirty (30) days before the beginning of this conference, less a $25 processing fee per person and any credit-card processing fees. No refunds of any kind will be made after this date. Students and/or advisors who register but do not attend the conference will pay the entire registration fee, but name changes to your list of registrants may be made at any time.

Force Majeure: Failure of Harbor Institute to perform any of the provisions of this Agreement by reason of any of the following shall not constitute an event of default or breach of this Agreement: strikes, picket lines, boycott efforts, fires, floods, accidents, war (whether or not declared), revolution, riots, insurrections, terrorism, acts of God, acts of government (including without limitation any agency or department of the United States of America), acts of the public enemy, scarcity or rationing of gasoline or other fuel or vital products, inability to obtain materials or labor, or other causes which are reasonably beyond the control of the defaulting Party.

2018 Honda Battle of the Bands HBCU College Fair

HBCU COLLEGE FAIR ENTRY FORM

Returning this year, as a part of the 16th Annual Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase, is the Historically Black College & University College Fair. This Fair is designed to expose potential students and their parents to the recruitment and admissions processes of HBCU institutions that offer marching band programs.

All HBCU institutions are invited to participate.  The recruitment fair will emphasize and stress opportunities that exist at HBCUs as well as admissions requirements,scholarship requirements, program requirements and financial aid opportunities.

In 2017, representatives for over 35 HBCUs were on hand to speak with over 6,000 thousand prospective students and family members.

The recruitment fair will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center in the Georgia Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018.

This event is open to the public and admission is free.

Set-up begins at 8:00 a.m. on event day only, January 27, 2018.  All items must be broken down and removed from event space at culmination of the event by 4 p.m.

The deadline for returning this College Fair entry form and payment is January 5, 2018.

Payment must be received in full with entry form to participate.

The National Black Men’s Health Network offers a pre-screening of Marvel’s Black Panther movie.

“Atlanta Black Panther Movie Festival” aims to empower the family during Black History Month!

“Today we are all the Black Panther! And today we will fight as one! For Wakanda!” –T’Challa (Earth-616)

Men and boys have a number of debilitating and life-limiting physical, mental and social health concerns that occur with greater frequency among individuals with the male gender. The NBMHN provide health education to all and reach Black men, boys, and their families with health awareness message, tools through art, screening programs, relaxation techniques, educational materials, and proactive opportunities.

  • The “Atlanta Black Panther Movie Festival” will start on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at Regal Cinemas (Atlantic Station) located at 261 19th Street NW Atlanta, GA at 7:00 pm. $25. (Donate a ticket to a family if you can not attend).
  • Educational and fun activities will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018, from 11 am – 5 pm at 250 Georgia Avenue, Atlanta, GA. 3rd floor of Georgia Hill Neighborhood Center. Free admission ($5 donation for activities)
  • A fundraiser will be held at Metro Fun Center on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 3 pm throughout February during Black History month to help lower costs of the tickets and activities for families. Let the entire family enjoy great music, bounce houses, arcade games, bowling, skating, laser tag, billiards, food, drinks, yoga, dancing, jewelry making and more.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast to be held Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the Sugarloaf Country Club in Duluth, GA from 9:00a.m. to 11:00a.m. The Breakfast will serve as an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of service of Rev. Are you ready to enjoy Atlanta’s favorite fashion fundraiser?

If so, we’re asking you to please save the date for STRUT: 2018 Mad Hatters Scholarship Luncheon & Fashion Show (STRUT) on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Georgia International Convention Center.

Organized and hosted by the Atlanta Suburban Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (ASACDST), the event raises funds for the Chapter’s scholarship program. Over the last five years and thanks to strong community support, the event has helped ASACDST award nearly $100,000 in scholarships to college-bound female students from Atlanta and Clayton and Fayette Counties.

We’re especially excited about 2018 as ASACDST will celebrate 25 years of serving the community and the event will celebrate 15 years of bringing together fashion and food for a worthy cause.  We’re working around-the-clock to make sure STRUT is an event filled with lots of special touches including:

  • Red Carpet entrance and photo station;
  • Fashion Show featuring a few of the nation’s top African American designers; and
  • Vendor marketplace featuring accessories, jewelry, and other unique items.

Beyond the mesmerizing show, STRUT guests will also enjoy a tasty lunch and may see a celebrity or two on and off the runway.  Trust us…you don’t want to hear about the show, you want to be there!

STRUT: Important Reminders

  1. Tickets/Table.  Tickets may be purchased individually or as a table of ten. Tickets are $65.00, and tables are $650.00 each.  If you would like to purchase a table please contact madhatters@asacdst.org. Prices are the same for seniors and youth.
  2. Location. The event will take place at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC).  GICC is located 2000 Convention Center Concourse, Atlanta, GA 30337.
  3. Parking. Onsite parking is $10 per car.
  4. Vendor Marketplace. Guests can visit vendors as early as 10:30 AM. (Vendors will still be open during the luncheon and fashion show.
  5. Start Times. As shared above, the Vendor Marketplace opens at 10:30 AM.  Doors open for the luncheon at 11:00 AM.  Early arrival is encouraged should you need to re-confirm or check your table assignment.
  6. Vendor Opportunities. A select number of vendor opportunities will be available.  Please send any vendor-related questions to madhatters@asacdst.org.
